Misinformed shoppers make bad purchases. It’s time to fix that…

With Humblebee!

People have been using cannabis for a long time, with the first written proof found as far back as 2800 BCE.

Different regions & people groups built their own techniques for consumption, many of which still exist today, while science has also given us some fun options as well.

To better understand what concentrates are, my friends at Humblebee Products – makers of Live Resin products – & I are here to explain the differences in cannabis concentrates, how they’re made, & who should be using them.

Hi! My name is Michael, but my Daughter calls me Baba. I’m a budtender & long-time cannabis educator, here to help you feel more confident every time you walk into a dispensary.

The Key Difference: Was a Solvent Used?

Every pre-roll, dab, cart, & edible on the shelf that contains added cannabis concentrates – “condensed extracts of the plant's trichomes” falls into one of two camps: Were chemical solvents used to make that concentrate?

Solvent-Based

Chemicals, which are later evaporated away, are used to strip the good stuff off the plant.

Whether the plant is fresh-picked (“live”) or the flower has been aged (“cured”), using solvents like butane is how we get most products – Distillate, THCa Diamonds, & Resin.

These various processes can create textures like shatter, sauce, & crumble, but all use more than just the plant & pressure.

Solvent-Free

Absolutely no chemicals.

Using ice, water, heat, pressure, and/or micron screens will give you either Hash (mechanically separated) or Rosin (pressure-formed), along with their subcategories.

Regardless of the unique name, forces are used in some way to avoid using solvents but still extract everything possible from the plant.

Solvent-Based Concentrates

“Distillate”

Light brown THC Distillate in a clear jar

THC Distillate

What is THC distillate?

Chemically, THC Distillate is the single THC molecule, & absolutely nothing else. That makes it a highly refined cannabis oil with super high potency, but to achieve that, it’s stripped of everything except one specific cannabinoid.

It’s clear or lightly colored & basically scentless. Perfect for mixing with over-the-top flavors.

It’s basically the moonshine of cannabis, with THC percentages often in the 90s but no other active compounds.

How is THC distillate made?

Distillate starts with a crude cannabis extract that gets winterized to remove waxes & fats, then decarboxylated to activate the cannabinoids.

From there, fractional distillation under reduced pressure isolates a single cannabinoid, such as THC or CBD, leaving behind a pure, potent oil.

Where can I find THC Distillate?

If you buy a vape cart from a major brand, eat a standard gummy, or grab a cheap syringe of infused cooking oil that doesn’t seem to say much else, you are almost certainly consuming Distillate.

It’s cheap & consistent, so it’s pretty much everywhere.

Who is THC Distillate For?

If you want to get as high as possible for as cheap as possible, or if you do not care about flavor & want a reliable punch, Distillate is for you. It vapes clean in pens & works really well in edibles.

“THCa DIAMONDS”

THCa Diamonds

THCa Diamonds

What are THCA Diamonds?

THCa Diamonds are solid crystalline structures of pure THCa, the non-psychoactive precursor to THC, usually, but not always, combined with terpene-rich sauce.

THCa naturally forms crystals under pressure, but THC remains oily & refuses to solidify. That means manufacturers can isolate potency up to 99% while keeping flavor in the surrounding sauce.

NOTE: "Liquid Diamonds" are just those same crystals melted back down before you smoke them, sacrificing the rock look for convenience & portability.

How are THCa diamonds made?

‘Sauce’ is extracted from cannabis with a solvent (such as butane). Then, through a process of applying specific heat & pressure over time (sometimes weeks), the THCa molecules naturally separate from the terpenes & lock into a crystal lattice structure.

Where Can I Find THCa Diamonds?

Diamonds are right between the super-affordable THC Distillate & much more involved Resin. They typically hit harder than straight Distillate + flavor but cost less than full-spectrum & solventless options.

Look for labels that say Diamonds, Liquid Diamonds, Diamonds & Sauce, THCa Diamonds, etc.

Who are THCa Diamonds For?

Diamonds are perfect for anyone looking for a more complete experience without breaking the bank. They can also serve as an entry point to dabbing: Diamonds rip, but are forgiving on the wallet during the learning curve period.

“Resin” (Live & CUred) with humblebee!

A Live Resin cartridge

NOTE: I was beyond lucky enough to work directly with Humblebee’s Founder & CEO, Derek Norman, on this section & the video you can find on my Instagram page a few days after this blog goes live!

What is resin?

Resin is a cannabis extract made by pulling cannabinoids & terpenes from the plant, keeping more of the plant’s natural profile than more refined products.

“Live Resin is a cannabis extract made from fresh-frozen plants, not dried ones.” In contrast, Cured Resin is “made from dried & cured flower.”

Because Resin isn’t stripped down like Distillate, it keeps more of the plant’s “original aroma, flavor, & cannabinoids,” resulting in a more full-spectrum experience that stays closer to the plant.

How is resin made?

“Right after harvest, the plant is fresh-frozen, which helps preserve delicate terpenes & cannabinoids.

“From there, it’s extracted at sub-zero temperatures to protect those compounds.”

For Cured Resin, the starting point is different, as it’s “made from dried + cured flower,” which means some of those more delicate compounds have already changed during the drying process.

Where can I find resin?

You’ll find Resin in a few main forms, depending on how you like to consume it, including some pretty potent edibles.

The other three ways are where Humblebee’s lineup tags in. From there, that same extract shows up in other convenient formats:

  • Dab Pucks (2.0g from Humblebee)

    • “Our flagship product… crafted from premium whole flower, never trim… delivering bold aroma, rich flavor, & potent effects.”

  • Cartridges (1.0g from Humblebee)

    • “No additives, no distillate, just strain-specific Live Resin… Expect clean hits, full flavor, & a strain-specific experience in every puff.”

  • Infused Pre-Rolls (1.2g from Humblebee)

    • “A curated blend of high-quality cannabis flower and 0.2 grams of Live Resin… enhancing flavor, boosting potency, & ensuring a consistent, full-spectrum experience.”

Whether you prefer eating, dabbing, vaping, or smoking, Resin shows up across the board, built around the same goal: Keeping the experience as close to the plant as possible.

Who is resin for?

Because it “remains true to the plant,” Live Resin is built for people who actually care about flavor and experience.

You’re getting “bold aroma, rich flavor, and potent effects,” along with a “strain-specific experience in every puff.”

The goal is simple: “no additives, no distillate, just strain-specific Live Resin,” making it a strong choice for anyone chasing a full-spectrum, true-to-plant experience.

Solventless Concentrates

“ROSIN” (Live & Cured)

What is rosin?

Made by applying heat & pressure to cannabis material, the Rosin creation process forces cannabis oils out without using any solvents.

Depending on the type & quality of plant/flower you start with, you’ll get different levels of quality & purity, but the core mechanics are always the same: Pressure & plant.

How is rosin made?

Cannabis plant material is placed in a press & squeezed under controlled heat. That combination melts & separates the trichomes from the plant matter, producing a clean, terpene-rich extract.

Sub-types you’ll see:

  • “Cured” or “Flower” Rosin: Pressed directly from cured buds.

  • “Hash” Rosin: Pressed from Hash or Kief for higher purity.

  • “Live” Rosin: Pressed from fresh-frozen material (via ice water Hash), giving the most terpene-rich result.

Where can I find rosin?

Rosin is a premium option typically kept in the freezer at your local dispensary. You’ll see it in small pucks or containers for dabbing, added to vape carts, & infused in “donuts” or other types of pre-rolls.

Who is Rosin for?

If you care about flavor, medicinal effects, & avoiding solvents entirely, Rosin is for you. If you care about your wallet, it may not be. It’s expensive, but still the go-to for people chasing the plant itself, but in concentrated form.

“HASH” (Bubble, & More)

What is hash?

Hash is easily one of the oldest cannabis concentrates in the world. At its core, all kinds of Hash are made from the plant's Resin glands, separated & recombined.

While many forms of Hash exist, there are a few more common types you’ll see at dispensaries:

  • Dry Sift / Kief: Screened off the plant with no water. Powdery & simple, with refined versions like static sift offering higher purity.

  • Ice Water Hash / Bubble Hash: Trichomes knocked off in ice water, then filtered through mesh bags. Can range from sandy to sticky, with high-end “full melt” suitable for dabbing.

  • Temple Ball / Traditional Hash: Often called the original concentrate, Temple Balls are made from trichomes pressed (& sometimes aged) into a soft, aromatic, often darker Hash.

  • Charas: Hand-rolled from live plants, sticky & deeply rooted in traditional methods.

  • Piattella: A modern, cold-cured Hash that preserves terpenes & creates a soft, dab-ready texture without pressing into rosin.

How is hash made?

All methods aim to separate trichomes from plant material mechanically with dry screening, ice water & filtration, or by hand. From there, the trichomes may be used loose, pressed, or refined further, depending on the desired style (see above).

Where can I find hash?

Look for Hash in a dispensary’s freezer area, pressed into blocks or balls, or as the base material for products like Hash Rosin. Quality & form vary widely depending on how it’s made & by whom.

Who is hash for?

Hash is for anyone who wants a more traditional, full-spectrum experience. It sits between flower & modern concentrates, offering more potency while still staying as close to the plant as possible.

Bringing It All Together

At the end of the day, all of this comes back to one simple question:

How was this made & what do I want out of it?

Everything on the shelf is just a different way of pulling the good stuff off the plant. Some brands use solvents to get there, others use pressure, water, & time.

From there, it’s just dialing in your experience.

  • Want cheap, strong, & available? Distillate.

  • Want a step up with potency & some flavor? Diamonds.

  • Want something that is like smoking some super fresh plant? Resin.

  • Want the cleanest experience possible? Hash & Rosin.
